Artist Spotlight - Airrisa Reneé Wilson

Written by Airrisa Reneé Wilson.

The only thing that brings me true peace. When life is good I tend to write less. I won't completely abandon my practice, just stare at an empty DAW for an hour, because whenever I’m happy, I don't want to make music. However, when I'm low, I like minor chords and slow BPMs, dramatic harmonies and telling sad stories.

Music is how I cope through hard things. It's been the only consistent thing in my life. People come and go, highs come down then I always go back to the music. Pen and paper, my guitar. It’s my best friend and I hope someone reading can understand this feeling. Everything could go and I would still sing. No one can take that away from me. It's mine like my fingerprint. It’s my everything. It’s such a visceral feeling that it's hard to put into words. There's some songs I wish I could roll up and smoke; or maybe via injection. Music is simply a part of my chemistry. I know no world without it. When I was lonely, heartbroken, and angry, she offered me a comforting breast with gentle hugs and a back rub. I accepted her grace a long time ago. When I’m with her I’m truly safe, truly free, truly human. She lets me speak and be heard, she's a great listener. She's always there, she's my best friend.

Coming to you from a less pensive tone, music truly has been my savior. I've tried a lot of things over my short twenty-two years and none of them have stuck like music has. That’s how I know it’s the fuel to my flame. One day I’m sure I'll understand more about how bright I can burn. Today, I still struggle with finding the balance between my practice and life’s lessons. I understand that I am relatively young thus still learning and growing. Ultimately these will be the experiences I write about and win Grammys for, so I'm okay with not really knowing myself right now. In that, I am free. I'm free to paint the story in real time.

Sincerely,

Airrisa Reneé Wilson
